HEALTHY FAMILY ILLINOIS (HFI)...

...PART OF THE HEALTHY FAMILIES AMERICA (HFA) INITIATIVE

HFI is a statewide network of voluntary home visiting programs for parents of newborns.

Two decades of research have shown home visiting programs to be successful at strengthening families by improving parenting skills and parent/child interaction.

Goals

To systematically assess for families strengths and needs, and refer as needed.

To enhance family functioning by building trusting relationships, teaching problem solving skills, and improving the family's support system.

To promote positive parent-child interaction.

To promote healthy childhood growth and development.

Services

Identification of family strengths and needs with appropriate referrals as needed.  This service is provided by a Family Assessment Worker.

Home visiting.  Participants receive intensive service initially with home visits decreasing in frequency over time.  Participants may receive visits up to the child's fifth birthday.  Home visits are provided by highly trained family support workers.

Eligibility

Referrals are taken prenatally or within 2 weeks of delivery.

Families voluntarily accept services.

Emphasis is placed on first time parents with special consideration given to teen parents.
